More than six years after his death at the age of 28, the life of the Grammy-nominated DJ and producer Avicii is being celebrated in a new documentary,<\/p>\n
\u201cAvicii- I Am Tim\u201d is now streaming on Netflix. Avicii, who was born Tim Bergling, narrates the film through archival footage.<\/p>\n
\u201cBefore Avicii, there was Tim,\u201d reads the Netflix description of the project. \u201cThrough his own words, witness how a prodigious musical talent became one of the defining artists of his generation.\u201d<\/p>\n
The film\u2019s director, Henrik Burman,\u00a0explained to Billboard\u00a0why he told the story in Bergling\u2019s own words.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I determined that he\u2019d be the one who\u2019d narrate this story, I thought that maybe it was how I could be close to him,\u201d Burman said. \u201cMaybe that\u2019s how I can meet him.\u201d<\/p>\n
A longtime music journalist and musician in Sweden, Burman had the blessing of Bergling\u2019s family and was fortunate to find a trove of interviews with Bergling over the course of his career to draw from.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019d say things like, \u2018If there\u2019s a documentary, we need to talk about alcohol; we need to talk about the bad things in my life,\u2019\u201d Burman said. \u201cI\u2019ve been looking for clues like this \u2014 I\u2019ve listened to Tim for hours and hours trying to understand him and put together the puzzle of who he was as a person and who Avicii was as this amazing artist.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bergling died by suicide while on holiday in Muscat, Oman. The film explores his struggles with\u00a0mental health and substance abuse, including journal entries from the Stockholm-born artist when he sought treatment.<\/p>\n
\u201cThose days in hospital were the most anxiety and stress-free days I can remember in the past six years, those were my true vacations, as depressing as it might sound,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n
The posthumous Avicii album \u201cTim\u201d was released in 2019.<\/p>\n
